Maybe it was the day or maybe it was the constant yammering of a disembodied voice that seemed to be there at the worst possible moment, but Jack needed a drink. There had been so many different times when he wished he could have just gotten one at a bar and left. Unfortunately, whenever he went to a bar, the voice yelled and screamed and if he could he would have strangled the Devil himself over it. Sinners were all around, he knew it, but he had no idea of telling them apart from the pure one. The Devil, as he believed the voice was, sought sinners. He always figured it was some biblical nonsense, but he did what he was told and the voice went quiet sometimes. If he was lucky.
As he made his way to the bar, his eyes shifted to several different people at the counter. There were drinks and bills, empty glasses and turned over napkins, even one or two silly little umbrellas. Girls and their crazy fruity drinks. Jack tapped the bar and got the bartender's attention so that he could get his own drink, an R&R, before resting his head in his palms. He knew that talking to the voice in public would leave people to believe he was insane so he tried to limit the amount of time he spent talking to it. If he absolutely had to, he would cover his mouth, cough or find some other way to conceal it.
When he finally got his drink, he left a few bills on the counter and then headed off to a table near the door, his eyes closed slightly as he listened. Right now he was trying to decipher if there were any sinners, just like the Devil had demanded. Of course he enjoyed the thrill of it, but there was not much of a punchline picking off the idiots and fools that wandered their way too far into trouble. His eyes were open again in a few seconds and he heard a voice from across the room.
"You just wait. I'll let her leave then get her outside, put a knife to her throat and.." That was all he needed to hear. From that point onward, Jack watched the man and followed his movements. A woman got up and left the bar, only she was not alone. The man he had been watching slipped a knife from his pocket and into his hand. His pursuit came quick and he was out the door after the woman.
Jack, on the other hand, finished his drink calmly and left it there on the table. He walked out of the bar and made his way around the side, where he could smell the two of them. Sure enough, the woman was pressed up against the wall with a knife to her throat and her skirt half-raised. The man had his hands on her waist and he seemed hungry. Whether or not it was a demonic hunger or just a simple human lust Jack did not care, it was all the same to him. Good or Evil, he was the worst kind. The kind that did not discriminate in the slightest.
Jack walked up to the man silently and slugged him hard enough to pop out a few teeth. He leaned over the man and then dropped to the ground on top of him. "You've been bad." He smirked and punched the man once more in the face, this time breaking his jaw. There was blood all over Jamie's hand. The man beneath him was trying to stammer out some words, but none came. Jack slammed his fist into the man's chest and nearly punctured it, he was sure. There would definitely be at least one broken rib after tonight, if he let the man live. The woman, shocked at everything that was going on, could do nothing but stand there and stare. Her would-be savior was beating the living hell out of her would-be attacker.

Life had been completely and utterly manic recently, it was starting to become hard for Evie to catch her breath. Being a slayer had been something that she never thought would be so hard. She hadn’t really celebrated her birthday that year even though it had been the huge one eight and she’d been promising the gu-- girls from college that she’d go out and drink with them for weeks. She was finally doing it. She’d taken the night off. Lisa offered to do the slay thing for her so that she didn’t have to. Evie had told Riley she’d spend it with him but been told to get out and have some funnnn!
Evie actually took a fair amount of time getting ready. She EARNED this. She deserved the time to herself. She wasn’t the biggest of partiers so they’d all arranged to just go to a nice little bar in town. It was a nice place. It was a walk-able distance from her place so she’d decided to walk it. There had been a heat wave over the last few days and when that happened in London you took advantage of it. Besides, getting in a car she’d probably melt. She’d driven to her dad’s place to get her little sister earlier that day and her leather seats had practically burned her skin. She had to sit forward to not get burned. Evie had said goodbye to her sister and her boyfriend and walked the 20 minutes to the bar.
Her friends were already there so it was just a case of meeting them really. She’d got there and been informed she wasn’t allowed to buy her own drinks and had been force fed, force drank, whatever the word is, over the top girly cocktails and with the little umbrella effect. For the first time in a long time Everton Brett was just doing her thing and having a giggle. No demons, no drama -- Just good honest fun. She’d danced and drunk her hearts content. She had been in there for a couple of hours and it wasn’t that she was bored or tired, but Evie needed to get outside. She was starting to feel claustrophobic. She’d got used to being out in the fresh air. She’d figured she’d just go out, get some air, possibly call home and say good night to Reah before she fell asleep.
Slipping out of the bar, one thing Evie hadn’t expected to happen was that someone would follow her but as soon as she left she could sense that someone was doing so. Evie knew it was coming but she let it come. She knew she could hold her own. She’d been flipped towards the wall and held to it with a knife to her throat. She had been told to be quiet and had her skirt lifted slightly. Evie was about to make a move. She knew this guy was human so she also knew she couldn’t really hurt him or worse. But before Evie had a chance to do anything however this guy was torn off her. Evie had to take two to make sure that actually happened.
Before her eyes a scene broke out, a scene where one guy was suddenly beating the living crap out of the guy who had attacked her. He’d informed the guy he’d been bad as he hit him. There was blood literally flying off the guy. Yeah he didn’t deserve candy and kittens but come on?? Evie just stood there in shock for a moment but finally snapped back to life, sliding her bag down onto the floor. Evie lunged forward and grabbed the guy instigating the attack.
This certainly wasn’t an every day thing for her. Not only was she not used to being ‘saved’ but she also wasn’t used to seeing this extremity of violence. She tore the guy she had hold of up to his feet. His victim, her attacker, was so badly beaten on the floor Evie knew he wasn’t getting up. Something in Evie wanted to yell and she kind of did. “SERIOUSLY WHAT THE HELL?” Evie didn’t stop to think who she might be dealing with or what the consequences of dealing with him would be.

Jack snapped out of it the moment the woman grabbed him and pulled him up. He had gone into a trace somewhere along the lines of pinning the man and pummeling him. This was definitely not a bad thing, though it did leave him curious how the rest of the world perceived him sometimes. The girl, obviously, had no desire to see the man beat down like he was, but for all he could tell she was about to be raped. Shaking his head, he smirked slightly and flicked some of the blood of his hand. With his other hand, he reached out and grabbed the girl by the throat, squeezing slightly.
"Ain't no reason to get yourself hurt, girly. You should be thankful, I just saved you from a terrible fate. Most women can't recover from the kind of thing." Jack took a deep breath and then released her, tilting his head to the side as he examined her. He seemed to tilt his head to the side at nothing, but in reality the voice was talking to him.
"She's been goooood, Jack, you can't have her. Don't you kill her." He heard the voice in whispers, even if no one else did. At first this alarmed him, but as time went by he actually sort of got used to it. It was nothing pleasant, that was certain, but it could have been a lot worse. The voice whispered all the time and it almost sounded human. It could have been demonic, loud, crazy or all kinds of other demented things. Thankfully, so to speak, it was not so bad.
"Next time, you may not be so lucky." His eyes shifted down to the man. He knew that she knew that the man was not getting back up, on his own at least. The knife was on the ground still, a large combat knife that looked like it had seen some use. Jack leaned over to the ground and picked it up before putting it away. It was going to be a souvenir, but it also might come in handy. Who could know when having a combat knife would save your life, especially in his world. Just because you were incredibly strong did not mean that you could get away just hitting everything.
"See you, girly." Jack waved his hand lazily and stuffed his hands in his jeans, turning his back to her. He had no idea what the girl was or who she could have possibly been, but as far as he could see she was a helpless victim in it. Maybe on another day she would be the sinner and he would have to kill her like he had finished the man there, but that day was not today. She was off free, this time. Of course, he also did not expect her to follow him, either. Most people were too afraid after seeing something like that. They would call the cops or just hide away hoping that he would not come for them.

What? Wait wait…. WHAT? One minute this guy was saving her and the next he had her pinned up by her throat. What the fricken hell was that all about? She frowned as he spoke to her. He clearly didn’t know who or what she was. How could he? But the crap he was giving her about she should be thankful and most women don’t recover -- PURLEASE!!!!! Was he from the stone age? Me man, you woman, man protect woman? What a load of crap. Evie was shy as hell up until the age of…. Now! She also spent pretty much her ENTIRE life hiding behind someone who she thought was bigger and better than her and then one day she was told actually she was bigger and she was better and she could kick some seriously butt. Evie just stood there and did nothing but scowl as he looked over her. She didn’t shake or cower like a scared little girl!! She wasn’t a scared little girl. Nothing that had happened tonight scared her in one little bit!! Actually that’s a lie there was this one guy that hit on her and HELLO can you say TOOTHBRUSH. I’m getting distracted aren’t I?? Anyyyyway..
Totally unaware that this guy was a demon, Evie was starting to think he was a bit of a weirdo to be honest. That and a total condescending asshole. Next time you might not be so LUCKY?? Was he for real?? Who did he think he was spiderman?? Well, with how up himself he seemed he might well have the spidey suit underneath those clothes he wore. This guy then turned away, picked up the knife her attacker had used and told her he’d see her. Evie’s jaw was very close to hitting the floor now. She couldn’t quite get over this guy. Evie held it all in until now, storming after him, shouting. “LUCKY?” Her body moved with a demeanour so foreign to her. She never did this, she never even got angry and she definitely didn’t confront people. Especially people who had just picked up big huge knives. Oh this was stupid. This was very stupid. So why did she keep going on. “What makes you think I couldn’t handle myself huh?? Maybe HE’S the lucky one, lucky you got to him before I did. More importantly what gives you the right to be such a jerk???”
Ohhhhkay yeah this was officially the most stupid thing she’d ever done and she went to a spice girls concert when she was 9. That was pretty stupid but noooo this topped that. This topped all of it. She’d seen the way he beat the crap out of that guy and the way he just shook it off like it was nothing. Evie didn’t know this guy could read minds, he didn’t know that he read the guys that had just attacked her. As far as Evie knew, he knew nothing. “For all you know that could be my boyfriend laying beaten back there! Maybe that was just…. something we get off on!” Eww! Even for Evie’s head that was an eww and she was the one that said it. “You lack the shining armour so don’t try and play the knight!!” Evie was done yelling at him now. Or at least she considered herself done. And with that she made a move to walk away, past him, to go get her bag and head back inside.

Jack stopped in his tracks when she began talking. This woman was both loud and obnoxious. The one thing that was keeping her unharmed right now was the fact that the voice had told him not to touch her. Everything in him screamed to off the girl, but he dare not doubt the Devil himself. It was one of those things where he was not entirely certain that it was the Devil, but he would rather follow orders and it not be Satan than disobey and actually have the fallen one royally pissed at him. At least that way he could rationalize facts through a separate strand of though. The voice often conversed with him when they were alone and he could have entire conversations with it.
When she began talking about him being the girl's boyfriend, he scoffed and turned around. His eyes, those piercing blue eyes, stared at the girl in disbelief. "Do you really expect me to believe the bullshit you're spreading right now?" He asked her, his head cocked to the side every so slightly. "I wasn't born yesterday." He shrugged and then laughed, "And if that really was your boyfriend, you would definitely be freaking out a lot more than you are now. Also, then I'd have to kill you." His eyes gave her a once over and then he smiled at her. It was one of those creepy smiles that you give someone that you're about to destroy. Of course, the voice said he could not touch her, but that did not mean he was not capable of threatening it. Saying and doing were two entirely different things!
"I'll say this once and once only." Jack cleared his throat, "Stop being a stupid little girl and get off my back. I'm not your knight in shining armor, you're lucky I don't off you as it is. You think you're hot shit little girl? You don't know what the fuck you're dealing with." He glared at the girl and marched right up to her, not allowing her to get past him by any means. "If you know what's good for you, you'll stop doubting the one who saved your life.." He paused for a moment, "And start remembering that there are a lot worse things out there than that meat-bag right there. I'm one of them." His eyes locked on hers and he gazed at her. It wasn't that he was trying to creep her out, but at the same time he wanted her to remember his eyes.
"So don't get in the way. forget you saw anything or I will come back for you." Jack grabbed her bag from the ground and dumped it out. He smiled wickedly, "Everton Brett." He turned his back on the girl, "And everyone you love." His head turned slightly so she could see his face. Those same piercing blue eyes looked back at her with a wicked stare. There had to be something wrong with this man. Something definitely wrong.

Did Evie expect him to buy this believe this bull shit she was spreading?? No of course not. Its called being hypothetical. Moron. He was actually really starting to irk Evie but when he informed her if that was her boyfriend he’d have to KILL her, she raised a brow. Something was seriously not right about this guy and it was starting to play on Evie’s mind. If she had the mere second to think and compose her thoughts she’d have worked it out by now. Evie was then told to stop being stupid little girl. The cocky bitch in her turned into an angry bitch. Once again he just ASSUMED her to be weak. He was down right nasty but she didn’t expect anything different. He then told her if she knew what was good for her she’d stop doubting the one that saved her life. Well that right there just made her wanna roll her eyes. Save her life? From THAT GUY?? If he’d seen what she’d managed to beat off the last few months he would NOT say that. His words kept ringing in her ears and then he said the thing that excelled them all… "And start remembering that there are a lot worse things out there than that meat-bag right there. I'm one of them." His eyes looked down into hers and as they did so she tried to search them. Everything clicked into place. The beating he gave the guy, his strength when he grabbed her, his entire demeanour. Demon!
There was barely time for Evie to accept what she just realized before this guy had gone past her and emptied her bag, still talking to her as he looked around and grabbed her drivers licence, telling her how he’d come after her and everyone she loved. She was in shock. Rule one of slaying as she’d been taught -- if you’re in a fight you cant win, run. But she couldn’t run. Not knowing or having seen what this thing could do and not knowing that he had her name and probably more off her drivers licence. “ WAIT… Stop…..” She waited for him to do so before saying what was probably the stupidest thing she’d said to date but for good reason. “I’m sorry!” To her family was everything and when she said he’d be after everyone she loved, all Evie could picture was Riley cuddled up on the couch with her little sister, the exact way they probably were right now knowing them. Evie couldn’t risk them. She couldn’t fight this guy, that’d make it worse. She could however, try and keep herself and everyone else safe, for now at least. Evie swiftly stepped over the beaten unconscious body on the ground and stuffed her stuff back into her bag. She turned her mouth up and let out a soft huff. “I think you under estimated me as much as I did you but I assure you, I’m NOT a little girl… But how ‘bout you let me buy you a drink? You seem to thank I should be thankful… let me thank you!” Now her eyes were just daring him. If he took the opportunity she wouldn’t have to try and fight him, something she didn’t want to do.. But she would.

"She's crazy." The voice rang out clear in his ears. There was a time when he wondered if anyone else could hear the voice, but he quickly realized that they could not. Those people thought he was crazy. He said they were stupid and then killed them. It was really not a decision he could make that would favor them being alive.
"You should be sorry." Jack mumbled and shook his head. Could people not even be grateful anymore? Honestly. Sure, saving her was just a side effect of what he was actually doing, but that was what was wrong with the world. People thought that his kind were bad. They claimed demons were the bane of the world, but he knew the truth. Humans could be just as bad if not worse than any demon he had ever met. Well, save for a few of them. There were some seriously hardcore demons out there.
"A..drink?" He tilted his head to the side as she offered. This seemed weird. Like a trick. What kind of trick could she possibly pull off, though? In the middle of a bar in the middle of the city. Was she planning to get him drunk or something? Sleep with him to make him feel better about what had happened? Was there something else going on in her mind that he wasn't guessing at? Certainly she knew that he was pissed and that she would end up on the wrong side of him if she pulled anything.
She wasn't a little girl. What was she getting at? All he could figure out was that she was trying to weasel her way out of his anger. What was it that she planned, though? The thoughts continued to fill his mind as he tried to work it out. He stood there for a few moments, sizing her up as it was, but then shrugged his shoulders. "I'll let you buy me a drink, but you need to remember something, girly. You keep acting like that, someone or something is going to try and kill you. I'd hate to see that happen, after all..you seem like such a nice girl." The last part of his speech sounded somewhat asinine, but he was trying to be honest, despite it all.

So he agreed to let her buy him a drink. Honestly she wasn’t planning anything. Not anything stupid at least. She didn’t have a death wish just yet. But saying that she hadn’t had to start organizing a wedding yet, maybe he could have her after all that started. He told her if she kept acting like that someone or something would try and kill her. She sighed slightly and rolled her eyes as she headed back to the door. “Would make a change…. Not…” She said under her breath before heading back inside. She pushed at the door and held it open for Jack before heading towards the bar.
Pulling herself onto a stall, Evie leaned back against the bar and looked to this man. She crossed her legs to keep her dignity and let out a small sigh. “So do you HAVE a name? I mean, you know mine!” She said, pulling her money out and waiting for a bartender to come over and ordering her drink. “Yeah can I get a… tall black and Russian and….. “ She turned to look at Jack and motioned her head. “What you having?” She had never had to buy a man a drink. She’d never even picked up a guy. That was one of the joys of planning to marry a man you met when you were six.
Evie was starting to feel bad she hadn’t even tried to help the guy that got the crap beat out of him out front. Shouldn’t she care? Shouldn’t she feel compassion? Maybe it was the fact the ass hole tried to ATTACK her. This wasn’t exactly the super fun, demon and stress free night she’d hoped for. Evie checked her phone and read the text message on it from Riley before shoving it back in her bag. All he had to say was he missed her and he loved her and everything in her felt strong again.
Evie had paid for her drink and moved to a quieter part of the bar to sit down and turned and just smiled at him. “So demon huh? How exciting!” Yeh.. She dropped the bomb! Not subtly either.

Jack tilted his head as he followed her into the building. He ran a hand through his hair and ruffled it to get it out of his face. She wanted to know his name and he was not all that sure he wanted to give her his. After all, if he gave her his name then he might have to worry about dealing with her later. That seemed like it would end up a terrible day. He shrugged his shoulders and straightened up before smirking slightly.
"It's Wes." Jack finally decided to give her a name, his middle name. This way he was not lying and would not have to worry about her coming back to haunt him, at least not by just giving him her his middle name
"C'mon, Jack! Be careful." The voice taunted him at the back of his mind. Jack's eyes shifted to the side at the bar and he nodded to the girl.
"R&R. Best drink ever made." He said and then shrugged his shoulders. Something about this girl made the voice antsy. He could not have explained what it was until she dropped the d-word. His eyes immediately shifted to hers and he watched her for some sort of reaction that would give away who and what she was. Not many people would even know when to properly use the term, but this girl seemed to know a lot more than she was letting on. Something was going on and the voice had been right about her.
"And where did you hear that, Everton?" Jack locked his eyes on the girl now and he refused to look away. This was a seriously bad situation. He was in the middle of a bar with someone that knew what he was. There had already been way too much said for him to pretend it was not true so the best he could do was to make a terrible warning clear. The man in the alley outside the bar was just a simple test of his power. That was nothing.
"Remember something." Jack paused, "Be careful what you say. Your friend today can be your enemy tomorrow. The enemy you had yesterday can be your friend today." He shrugged his shoulders, "Do yourself a favor and get tougher. You're not one of them, so that leaves only three possible explanations. You're not old enough for one of them, so it's out. You don't look all that bright to me, so that leaves the other out. That means one thing." His teeth clenched and he smirked slightly.
"Slayer." Jack whispered lightly.

Evie had never had a burst of anger like she had just then. Part of her now was coming down from that and freaking out honestly. She didn’t know what to do in this situation. There wasn’t hand books on this. If you haven’t survived this sort of situation then you cant know what to do in this situation. She was trying to find a way to make sure this guy wasn’t mad at her. If he left her presence mad at her then he’d leave with the idea of looking her up in the future. She was scared of that idea. What was the point in lying about it, she was. She had ordered his drink after being told it was the best drink ever made. “I’ll take your word for it!” Calling him out as a demon might have been a really really bad idea but well… She didn’t realize that till after wards. She’d been asked where she heard that but before she could speak, ‘Wes’ went into a completely condescending lecture about enemies and how she wasn’t old or smart enough to be one of his other ideas of what she could be. Evie was actually upset by that comment. She WAS smart. Maybe she wasn’t being smart right now but she bloody well was!! She’d taken 7 A-Levels by the age of 15 which is more than some people take in a life time. Not only that, she got top marks in all of them.
Once he’d stopped talking Evie took a deep breath, not looking at him and sucking in her left cheek for a moment before sighing. “Look I’m not a trouble maker. I’m not trying to cause trouble and I don’t want enemies. Honestly I’m just trying to work out what you are! I realize that you being what you are and me being what I am, which good guess by the way, means you’re probably going to keep talking to me like dirt and you know what I can deal with that. But please stop making assumptions about me, because the only things you got right so far is what I am and my name. Which, I hate, so please call me Evie?” Was that stupid again? She hoped he wouldn’t have a go at her again but meh, she was expecting it. “I don’t have all the answers yet… So I really can’t figure you out….. And I don’t like it…. I don’t get why you wail on some guy in an alley way and then have a total easy kill, petite girl who’s neck you had in a lock, yet you walked away… I don’t get it!” Evie was swirling her drink with her straw but she had butterflys that wouldn’t stop fluttering.
